MUSEUMS
The finest geological collection in the region is at the Sedgwick Museum
in Cambridge, which is also a valuable source of advice. In Essex, Chelmsford,
Harlow and Saffron Walden museums have purpose-built geology galleries.
Many other Essex museums have good geological collections and some have
specimens on display, notably Colchester Natural History Museum which
has a display of Red Crag fossils and Southend Central Museum which has
a display of London Clay fossils from the Essex coast.

Other museums within easy reach include Ipswich Museum (which has on display
in the main gallery a full size replica of a mammoth complete with tusks
and woolly coat) and, of course, The Natural History Museum in London
which houses the national collections.
This Jurassic ammonite (left) from the boulder clay of Saffron
Walden can be seen in Saffron Walden Museum's Geology and Wildlife Gallery.
