Forest School and Outdoor Learning training courses

Essex Wildlife Trust Outdoor Learning team offer a suite of Outdoor Learning Qualifications including Forest School training and Award in Outdoor Learning to equip staff with skills to lead learning outdoors. The courses are all accredited by Agored Cymru (Wales OCN). In addition Essex Wildlife Trust offers Forest School skills days to provide ongoing professional career development for trained adults.

All courses take place at Essex Wildlife Trust Headquarters, Abbotts Hall Farm, Gt Wigborough, Essex CO5 7RZ

Outdoor Learning Qualifications 

Level 3 certificate in Leading Forest School (QCF)

Courses planned: Spring and autumn each year.

This course consists of five units delivered over eight training days plus extra support from us to equip you with skills and knowledge to set up a Forest School and become an effective Forest School leader.

Modular Training Course: November 2017

Level 2 Award in Assisting Forest School (QCF)

Courses planned: Spring and autumn each year.

This course develops practical skills to become a qualified Forest School assistant. It also provides an opportunity to top up to level 3 at a later date

Level 3 Coastal School Leader (QCF)

Course planned for autumn each year.

This course is a top up course designed for Forest School Leaders who want to deliver a similar programme at the coast. It can be part of the Level 3 Certificate in Leading Forest School for those who are not trained to Level 3.

Level 2 Award in Outdoor Learning Practice (QCF)

Course planned for autumn each year. 

This is a course for teaching staff and environmental educators to take the curriculum outside and improve outdoor areas for learning.

Forest Skills Days 2016

We host and run a variety of Skill building days for adults working with children outdoors to enable you to build on your outdoor learning skills.

Courses may include the following:

  • Fires and Cooking
  • Ropes and Knots and Crafting
  • Teaching children Carving Skills
  • Woodland Games and Activities
  • Knife skills
  • Mindfulness
  • Training for adults supporting Forest School leaders

Inset Training

We offer inset days and twilight courses AT YOUR SITE to train staff to use the outdoors to deliver the curriculum creatively, identify wildlife on your site to teach identification skills and demonstrate simple activities to make best use of it or improve it for the benefits of learning and wildlife.

  • Benefits and risks of using the outdoors as a learning environment.
  • Small optional portfolio.

We offer whole day or half day Inset days. Both have an optional follow-up twilight course.

Cost is £575 for the full day including twilight course.
