Habitat: freshwater and marshes

Winters in Africa, summer visitor to most of Europe

Male: Brown/maroon head with bold white eyebrow, grey flank and black and white upperparts

Feeds by dabbling or up-ending in shallow areas of water

Eats aquatic invertebrates and plants; flight direct and strong

Nest is a lined hollow, well hidden near water; small numbers breed in the UK

1 Brood April – May ; 8-11 eggs buffy
