Medium sized diving duck found on freshwater as often as on sea

Habitat: freshwater lakes, reservoirs, sea and estuaries

Widespread winter visitor; breeds in N.Europe

Male: Black and white upperparts, green glossed head with large white patch between bill and eye; yellow eye

Forms small loose flocks, often diving to feed; flies very frequently

Eats molluscs, crustaceans; flight strong; Wingbeats make a far carrying noise

Nest is a unlined Tree hole; breeds Scandinavia and N. Scotland

1 Brood April – June ; 6-11 eggs blue green
