Abberton Ranger Blog – March 2018

Blossom and leaves are just starting to show on the trees on the nature reserve. A sure sign of Spring.

The Ranger and Volunteers have been cutting back the wildflower and grassland areas that we left long for cover over the winter months. Soon the new flowers will be growing through, so it is good to remove the dead material to give them space and keep nutrients low. The hazel panels beside some of the bird hides have been repaired where the March winds have caused damage. The Sand martin bank at the western end of the reservoir was checked and some maintenance carried out ready for the new season in the hope that it may be used for nesting this year. It could take a few seasons as it is a new nest site, so the birds need to find it first!
