Lower Thames Crossing to impact wildlife in Essex

Lower Thames Crossing to impact wildlife in Essex

Essex Wildlife Trust has fundamentally opposed the plans for a Lower Thames Crossing. Help us raise awareness of the potential damage to wildlife and register your views before 24 February.

Essex Wildlife Trust has fundamentally opposed the plans for a Lower Thames Crossing. The LTC proposes to connect Kent and Essex through a tunnel beneath the River Thames, but with harmful implications on wildlife and habitats.

The public can help us raise concerns for wildlife and wild spaces that will be impacted by this project, by registering and expressing their views on the scheme.

You must register by the 24 February 23:59pm to have your say.

Below is a summary of the main objections outlined in the Trust's full position statement. This can be used or adapted by the public to object to the Lower Thames Crossing project:

I/We have serious concerns about the impact on wildlife and habitats in Essex, including:

  • Biodiversity loss, such as water voles, reptiles and rare insects.
  • Damage to and fragmentation of habitats, including ancient woodland and local wildlife sites.
  • Increased noise and lighting disturb communication, breeding, feeding and movement in species such as bats, birds and insects.
  • Reduce the remoteness and wildness of the landscape and its tranquillity.
  • Generating more traffic and increasing CO2 emissions, which directly conflicts with the government's target to achieve net zero by 2050.
  • Associated development and future developments will put more pressure on wildlife and wild spaces.

Please note that all objections must be made in this initial phase. Any further objections cannot be raised in future correspondences once the initial pre-examination phase has concluded.
