We are welcoming spring by celebrating the continued conservation work happening across our nature reserves.

Blue House Farm wetland project completed

We are excited to announce that the conservation project at Blue House Farm nature reserve has been completed, and we are hoping that public access will be available after the bank holiday weekend. The aerial footage below demonstrates the size of this new wetland, spanning over 40 hectares of work, which is already starting to hold water in the scrapes and ditches created.

The project will help to support vulnerable ground-nesting birds like lapwing and redshank, alongside increasing the habitat available to wading birds that feed and breed in the muddy, marshy banks of wet grassland and the nearby estuary.

This project was funded by Biffa Award

Thameside partners with Buglife

In partnership with Buglife, we have been delivering Thurrock Stepping Stones, a project aiming to improve sites for invertebrates, and provide community engagement such as bug hunts, moth trapping and bumblebee ID.

This project began almost a decade ago, and the legacy of the project continues on. Recently, USP College visited Thameside Nature Discovery Park and helped us restore our habitat piles. These make excellent habitats for invertebrates, made up of pulverised fuel ash, rubble, chalk and sand!

Restoration at Fingringhoe

Fingringhoe's trunk wall

There was a small collapse in the sea wall on the scrape in front of Laurie's and Crawshaw hide. With the help of our fantastic volunteers, the team spent a morning putting coir matting (coconut fibres) on the eroded part to stabilise the bank. Then, they  created two large trunk dead hedges. These will protect the bank from wave action, and the lower one will hold back any silt that builds up behind it. The trunks are lashed together so they are sturdy and won't be taken away by the tide.
