Recycling tree guards

Recycling scheme

The plastic-free tree planting initiative is two-pronged.

Firstly, the goal is to remove all plastic tree guards from Essex Wildlife Trust sites entirely. This was launched as a trial at Abberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park, in partnership with Essex & Suffolk Water. Included in this, is a recycling programme for the recovered tree guards, so they can be disposed of sustainably.

Over the last decade, we have planted over 80,000 trees across Abberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park and the wider reservoir. Watch the video below to hear about our partnership with Essex & Suffolk Water, and how together, we are moving towards a more sustainable future in tree planting.

With the help of our wonderful volunteers, we have removed over 4,500 plastic tree guards at Abberton so far.

Thanks to the trial carried out at Abberton, we can continue the removal of plastic tree guards across our nature reserves and discovery parks.
