Abberton Ranger Blog – February 2018

February concluded the hedge planting for this season, totalling 6,000 trees planted, and taking the grand total that has been planted on site by rangers and volunteers so far to 76,000. Some young hedges were pruned before the bird nesting season begins and to help the hedges to thicken up.

February finished off with a large amount of snow at Abberton meaning the reserve had to be closed to the public for a couple of days due to drifts on the driveway. Birds on the reserve got some extra feed in the bird feeders and the ice broken on the ponds to provide water. It is a harsh time of year for wildlife but at least in this part of the country it did not last too many days.
