Our nature reserves are cherished spaces, providing a protected home for wildlife and often hold a special place in the hearts of those who visit. Many people find comfort in choosing a special place within nature to remember a loved one by scattering their ashes somewhere peaceful and enduring.
Is ash scattering possible at our reserves?
We kindly ask that you get in touch with us to seek permission before making any arrangements. Because of the delicate balance of our habitats and environmental concerns, not all our reserves are suitable for this practice, and it’s important that we protect the wildlife and landscapes that make these places so special.
At Essex Wildlife Trust we manage over one hundred nature reserves that provide homes for rare and vulnerable species. Because ashes can alter the soil and effect these finely balanced ecosystems, we’re sure you’ll understand that we cannot allow scattering in sensitive habitats or protected areas. We also cannot permit ash scattering at our reserves that are a recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as it is imperative that we honour the protections on this type of land.
How to request permission
Please contact our Legacy Team on legacies@essexwt.org.uk including the name of the reserve that you are considering, we can then check feasibility with our wardens. If your request is approved, we will also send over our ash scattering policy and guidelines, to best protect the wildlife on site, fellow visitors and our wonderful volunteers and staff who look after the reserves.
There is no fee for scattering ashes at our reserves, however as a charity, we would be very grateful for any contribution towards our work, protecting the wildlife and spaces of Essex.
