Abberton Ranger Blog – July 2018

The hot dry weather has continued through July

The grassland areas are looking quite brown, some of the young trees are starting to suffer and I think we will unfortunately have some losses this year. Depending on how many we will have to decide whether to replant or if there are enough surviving to fill in any gaps in new hedgerows. The wildflower areas are still looking dramatic with Wild carrot in full bloom and looking lovely across the viewing mound. Butterflies and Dragonflies are thriving in the warm sunny conditions. There are some impressive looking dragonflies on the reserve including Broad-bodied chasers and Emperors. Clouded yellow butterflies are now being seen along with Painted lady, gatekeeper, meadow brown and Common blue.
