Remember a Charity Week: Richard’s story

Remember a Charity Week: Richard’s story

Guy Edwardes/2020VISION

Some of Richard’s earliest memories are of nature. In his pre-teen and teen years, he remembers watching his garden eagerly for signs of wildlife. From the birds visiting the table, hedgehogs shuffling about at night and a pair of curious moorhens visiting a neighbour’s pond, his love of nature began.

These days, Richard continues to watch wildlife with a camera in hand, as he is now a keen photographer. Hearing the first signs of chiffchaff’s singing in early spring is always a delight. Nightingales singing as the sun rises and sets in late April and early May, the ‘purr’ of turtle doves during the height of summer, and the arrival of winter visitors like Brent geese are all highlights for him and are all iconic Essex species.

However, Richard has witnessed the rapid collapse in populations of so many species that used to be common and widespread due to over-development and habitat degradation already in his lifetime. He wants us to urgently reverse this and rewild our communities, our country, and our world. He feels strongly that nature needs our encouragement and protection, and we need nature for the well-being of our physical and mental health.

Richard strongly believes in showing his support to environmental and wildlife charities and is a long-standing member of many of them including Essex Wildlife Trust.

Richard tells us why he has left a gift in his Will:

“There is something special to me in supporting Essex Wildlife Trust which represents and protects the local area that I have lived in for the vast majority of my life. Leaving a legacy is very important to me. I made my Will in late 2019 and I had no hesitation in leaving both a residuary bequest and specific bequests to Essex Wildlife Trust so that their amazing work in protecting and restoring the environment and wildlife of Essex can continue. Never has such work been more vital and I urge everyone to consider leaving a legacy, however small the contribution.”
