About the event

With the coldest part of the year upon us, John will look at the world of winter visiting birds.

Despite appearances, here on the Western edge of Europe, and the South Eastern edge of England, our winter climate is relatively mild compared to much of the continent. Birds such as Fieldfares and Redwings are familiar, and will even visit our gardens during cold snaps, but increasingly, insectivorous birds such as Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps, largely from continental populations, are spending their winters in Britain, perhaps responding to a warming climate. Similarly, some species are finding enough food closer to home, resulting in reduced numbers finding their way to the UK, perhaps creating inaccurately gloomy pictures of their global conservation situation.

Join us to look at some of the fantastic passerines which inhabit our hedgerows in winter, explore their epic journeys, and learn how to welcome wintering birds into your gardens and community spaces.
