If you’re concerned about a planning application affecting wildlife near you, you can respond directly to your local council.
You do not need to be a planning expert to comment on a development proposal. If you can explain clearly how a planning application could affect habitats, species or access to nature, your response can help decision-makers understand what matters locally.
Planning decisions made today will shape the future of wildlife and wild places in Essex. Essex Wildlife Trust is fully engaged with planners to try to ensure that any development avoids or minimises harm to the natural environment. We scrutinise and comment on both strategic planning policy, National Strategic Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) and individual planning proposals. We are also working to ensure that Essex can adapt to the impacts of climate change through the protection and enhancement of habitat networks in Local Plans.
Essex Wildlife Trust cannot respond to every local planning application, so this guide is here to help you take action yourself.
Find a planning application in Essex
You can usually find planning applications through your local council’s online planning portal. Search using the site address, postcode or planning application reference number.
If you want to object to a planning application in Essex, or simply comment on it, make sure you respond before the consultation deadline.
How the planning process works
- An application is submitted: Developers send plans and supporting documents to the local council.
- A consultation period opens: The public is given time to comment. There will normally be a period of 21 days to respond.
- The council reviews comments: Planning officers and councillors consider public responses alongside planning policy, expert advice and technical reports.
- A decision is made: The application may be approved, refused or amended.
Because consultation periods are often short, it is important to act quickly once an application is published.
