Geography: Carbon Capture
Collect data from a range of tree species to compare the rates of carbon capture in the local area. Use the findings to help apply existing knowledge to understand the inputs and outputs of carbon storage and the factors that drive change in storage overtime. Time will also be spent looking at the impacts of climate change on local ecosystems and the importance of creating new carbon sinks, using case studies from Essex Wildlife Trust landscape management.
Geography: Local Ecosystems
Build students’ understanding of how ecosystems in the British Isles have changed over time, collecting data on succession in a given ecosystem. They will spend time collecting data to build an understanding of the characteristics of an ecosystem (woodland, heathland etc), including changes occurring, the impacts of these and the conservation strategies used to manage them. Students will see first-hand the conservation strategies being used within the nature reserve you visit as well as looking at other strategies used by Essex Wildlife Trusts conservation team across the county allowing us to evaluate impact.
Geography: Coastal Landscapes (Naze only)
Collect data for the fieldwork investigation element of the exam specification whilst strengthening students’ understanding of coastal processes, landscape change and management. Students will explore the local geology, systems and processes in affect, landscape development and coastal management strategies. They will be guided though conducting a study to examine the effectiveness of the coastal management strategies and how these impact the beach morphology.
Biology: Practical Skills
Collect data for the required practical element of the A-level specification at one of our nature reserves using a range of different sampling techniques. Students will investigate the distribution of species in a habitat as well as impacts of biotic and abiotic factors.
You could even turn it into two days to collect data for the independent element of the syllabus using our equipment, perhaps even going to a different nature reserve.
