How a forgotten garden in Shenfield was brought back to life

Tucked behind St Mary's Church on Hall Lane, Shenfield, there's a quiet parch of green called The Meadow. Not many people know it's there but those who do, love it.

Back in 2005, RHS Chelsea Flower Show winner and local resident Stephen Hall designed this special space with just one clear aim: to create a peaceful, wildlife-friendly garden where people could slow down, reflect and just enjoy being close to nature.

But like many good things, The Meadow needed care. By 2019, without regular attention, it had become overgrown and uninviting. Nettles brambles and litter took over, and sadly, the space was being used for all the wrong reasons.

That's when Essex Wildlife Trust's Brentwood & Billericay Local Group stepped in.

Over the last six years, a small but mighty team of volunteers has brought The Meadow back to life. They've cut back the brambles, made space for wildflowers, cleared pathways, and encouraged wildlife to return. Now, it's once again a space people can enjoy - to walk, sit, think or listen to birdsong.

And the work continues.

Every second Tuesday afternoon of the month, the team holds a friendly working party. It's relaxed, open to everyone, and there's no pressure to come every time. If it's raining, they take a break - nature waits!
