About the event

Join our Education Officer and Southend City Council's Park Warden for an introduction to Dormice surveying techniques.

Do you want to learn more about the wildlife and conservation work that happens at Belfairs? Join us on a guided walk to Belfairs Nature Reserve (Hadleigh Great Wood) where we will explore the ideal habitats for dormice in Hadleigh Great Wood.

You will get an insight into how Southend Dormouse Group surveys dormouse boxes in Belfairs Nature Reserve as demonstrated by a licensed holder. You will also understand the importance of Dormice in Belfairs and in UK conservation as a whole and we will discuss conservation strategies used to protect their presence.

Please note that we will not be looking for or finding real dormice in this workshop. This is to ensure dormice are protected and undisturbed in our nature reserve. This is a hands-on workshop about surveying techniques and conservation.

Session times: 10am-12pm (please arrive at beginning of session)

Tickets are £12.99 per adult. Advance booking is essential.

FAQs

🎫 Who needs a ticket to attend?

All adults will need a ticket to attend.

📍Where do we meet?

Meet outside the Nature Discovery Centre. Please allow time for parking. If you arrive later, further meeting point instructions will be sent before the event.

🥾What should we wear?

Most of our events are fully outdoors, and you need to come dressed for the weather.  We recommend layers (top and bottom), which can get mucky. Wellies (with thick socks) and waterproofs are a good shout if you have them.

🌍Where are you based?

We are located in Leigh-on-Sea, just off the A127 in Southend-on-Sea. We are also close to Rochford, Hadleigh, and Rayleigh.

🚗Is there parking?

Yes, we have two free car parks. The main car park is located within the main entrance but has limited spaces and is a short walk to the Nature Discovery Centre. The second car park is located behind The Inn at Belfairs pub on Eastwood Road North. The Nature Discovery Centre is approximately a 15-minute walk away from the second car park, straight through the woodland. Please allow enough time for parking when arriving for your event.

🚻Are there toilets?

Yes. Our Belfairs Nature Discovery Centre has toilets (including an accessible toilet and baby changing facilities)

Is there a café?

There is a café serving hot and cold drinks, snacks, ice cream, and light lunches.

🐕‍🦺Can we bring a dog?

As much as we love our furry friends, only assistance dogs are welcome at our events.
