Nature in Essex and across the UK has been under pressure for decades, with habitats shrinking and species in decline. The LNRS sets out a clear roadmap to reverse that trend, helping communities, landowners, farmers and organisations work together to create bigger, better and more connected spaces for nature to thrive.
Developed over two years in collaboration with local partners, the LNRS maps out more than 130,000 hectares – around a third of Essex – highlighting where nature can be protected, restored and expanded. It sets ambitious goals, including increasing good-quality habitat from 14% to 25% by 2030, supporting sustainable farming practices on 50% of farms, and significantly improving the connectivity of wildlife habitats. The Essex LNRS is a local version of a national scheme to tackle the biodiversity crisis.
This strategy is not just for specialists. Everyone in Essex can play a part in nature recovery, whether by creating pollinator-friendly gardens, supporting local biodiversity projects or making everyday choices that benefit the environment. Every action, however small, contributes to a healthier natural landscape for future generations.
