Beneath the waves and along Essex's shoreline lies a world full of fascinating wildlife. Our coastline supports incredible marine species, from cuttlefish to native oysters, with vital habitats such as seagrass meadows providing food and shelter for many creatures. This National Marine Week, discover how small actions can help protect the marine life that make Essex's coast so special. 

Our incredible coastal creatures and habitats face a range of challenges, including habitat loss, pollution and the impacts of climate change. Vital habitats such as seagrass meadows and native oyster beds have declined significantly, despite the important role they play in supporting wildlife, improving water quality and helping our coast adapt to change.

The good news is that there are many ways we can make a difference. Essex Wildlife Trust is working to protect and restore our marine habitats and species, and you can help too. By taking small actions and making simple changes, together we can reduce pressures and damage, and help to protect and conserve our beautiful coastline.  

At home:

• Reduce single-use plastics
• Use eco-friendly cosmetic and cleaning products
• Choose sustainable seafood if you eat fish or shellfish
• Support marine conservation by becoming a member, volunteering or donating
• Share what you've learnt with friends and family 

When visiting the coast:

• Pick it up - Make sure you pick up litter and keep our environment clean. You could also join one of our beach clean events
• Record wildlife you spot - Let us know what you see during your visit by submitting on nature counts
• Coastal etiquette – Avoid damaging our coastal wildlife and habitats by being aware of the species that live there such as beach-nesting birds. Make sure you steer clear of them, and avoid using or landing watercraft in sensitive areas
