Remember a Charity Week: Olive’s story

Remember a Charity Week: Olive’s story

James Adler

Olive Griffiths was a member of the Trust for over 19 years, and our Legacy Manager, Rosalyn Leclercq, had the pleasure of spending the day with her in 2015, when Olive asked to meet and talk about leaving a Gift in her Will to Essex Wildlife Trust.
Olive and her horse

Olive was an independent and determined lady with a passion for art, animals and wildlife. Olive was also concerned for the future regarding the environment and climate change.

With Olive’s help, her garden became a wildlife haven of its own. She had two holes cut out of the gravel boards to invite hedgehogs into her garden and was successful in seeing them appear many times. Olive always wanted beehives or a bee hotel, but she had to delay this when she found out that her neighbour had a fear of bees. As soon as the neighbour moved house, Olive got her wish and, finally, installed bee hotels in her garden. To help her new buzzing residents, Olive had a lovely array of flowers in her garden, her poppies were notably delightful. She understood the importance of wildflowers for pollinators and wanted to ensure that insects and plants thrived in her garden together.

In addition to watching wildlife, wildlife became her muse and she often created artwork masterpieces based on the natural world. Olive was a very talented lady.

Olive sadly passed away in 2020. Thanks to Olive’s foresight, she left a gift in her Will to Essex Wildlife Trust (and nine other charities that were close to her heart). Her wonderful gift is being used to support our ongoing conservation work around the county to protect the Essex wildlife she adored.
