Mother’s Day is the perfect time for getting outside, the first signs of spring are appearing, birdsong fills the air, early butterflies begin to emerge, and fresh green shoots begin to appear. If you’re looking for a simple way to spend quality time together, a peaceful walk in nature is the perfect way to celebrate; and Essex Wildlife Trust have a variety of reserves across Essex which are guaranteed to delight.

From coastal views to woodland trails, here are some of our favourite Essex Wildlife Trust reserves to make this Mother's Day a memorable stroll.

Warley Place nature reserve

A hidden oasis near Brentwood, Warley Place is one of Essex Wildlife Trust’s most magical springtime walks. Once the home of renowned horticulturalist Ellen Willmott, the gardens have long since returned to nature, creating a beautiful blend of woodland, wildflowers and historic ruins.

In early spring, the reserve begins to burst with colour as snowdrops and early blossoms appear along the winding paths. Mature trees provide a peaceful canopy overhead, while birds flit through the undergrowth. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric place for a gentle wander and a perfect choice for those who love a touch of history alongside their wildlife.

Fingringhoe Wick nature reserve

Just outside Colchester, Fingringhoe Wick offers one of the most diverse landscapes in Essex. Boasting our oldest reserve, the woodland paths, open grasslands and sweeping coastal views combine to make this reserve a fantastic destination for a Mother’s Day walk.

At this time of year, early butterflies often dance through sunny clearings, and the estuary views across the Colne provide a beautiful backdrop for a relaxing stroll. Even with its incredible wildlife, Fingringhoe Wick still feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

Langdon Nature nature reserve

Langdon Nature Discovery Park is a brilliant choice for families looking to combine nature with a little adventure. With wide trails, big skies and sweeping views across the Thames Estuary, it’s a fantastic place to stretch your legs.

For younger visitors, the much-loved Peter Rabbit trail adds a playful element to the walk, while the sensory garden begins to come alive in spring with colour, scent and sound. Whether you’re exploring the woodland paths or pausing to take in the views from the hilltops, Langdon offers something for everyone.

Abberton Reservoir nature reserve

For mums who enjoy birdwatching or wide-open landscapes, Abberton Reservoir is hard to beat. The reservoir is internationally important for wildlife and provides a spectacular setting for a peaceful walk.

The visitor centre overlooks the vast expanse of water, where ducks, geese and wading birds gather throughout the year. Spring brings increasing bird activity as migratory species begin to arrive, and resident birds prepare for the breeding season. Special species to spot include spoonbills, barn owls and skylarks. The accessible trails around the nature reserve make it an easy and relaxing place to enjoy nature together.

Hanningfield Reservoir nature reserve

If woodland walks are more your style, Hanningfield Reservoir is a wonderful choice. The reserve’s tranquil trails wind through ancient woodland and alongside the reservoir, offering plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

Spring is a particularly special time here, as woodland birds become more active, and the forest floor slowly begins to awaken. The calm water of the reservoir creates a peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal location for a slower-paced Mother’s Day walk. Keep an eye out for great crested grebe performing the ultimate dance display as they try to win a mate.

Afterwards, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in our Nature Discovery Centre, with views overlooking the reservoir and our busy bird feeders!
