About the event

Abbotts Hall is on the threshold of rural and wild, where historic fields transition naturally into the coastal saltmarsh of the Blackwater Estuary.

In this guided walk led by Senior Ranger Matt Twydell, you can see how Abbotts Hall is transforming, and how it fits into the wider landscape. You will learn about the creation of ponds, the importance of scrub and grassland, and the restoration of natural processes including traditional grazing. The tour will include visits to at least one hide and the opportunity to spot some of the wildlife that this remarkable site attracts.

Please arrive at the Joan Elliot meeting rooms from 9.15am for a 9.30am start. On-site parking is available, and toilet facilities can be used before the walk begins and again on your return.

The guided walk follows a largely flat route along mown grass and paved paths. However, the ground can be uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is essential.

You will have the opportunity to use the toilets and refill water bottles before setting off, but there are no facilities elsewhere on the reserve.

Although visits to the bird hides provide opportunities to rest, participants should be comfortable spending more than two hours on their feet without access to additional facilities.

Please wear clothing suitable for the weather and bring sun protection, drinking water and any snacks you may need.

Please note that access to the reserve is only available as part of this guided walk.

The ticket price is £25 per person. Advance booking essential.

Please read our event terms and conditions before booking your place.

The closest café and shop is Abberton Nature Discovery Centre, approximately 7 minutes’ drive away with opening hours of 10am – 4pm.

This guided walk is also available for group bookings. If you have an organisation, community group or other identifiable group who would be interested in visiting and learning about the landscape, how we manage it and the wildlife that it supports, please get in touch.
