About the event

Abbotts Hall is on the threshold of rural and wild, where historic fields transition naturally into the coastal saltmarsh of the Blackwater Estuary.

In this guided walk led by Senior Ranger Matt Twydell, you can see how Abbotts Hall is transforming, and how it fits into the wilder landscape. You will learn about the creation of ponds, the importance of scrub and grassland, and the restoration of natural processes including traditional grazing. The tour will include a visit to the breach hide and the opportunity to spot some of the birds that this remarkable site attracts in winter.

Arrival information

Meet in the Joan Elliot meeting rooms from 10.15am for a 10.30am start.
Parking is available. There are toilet facilities available at the start and end of the walk.

Important preparatory information

The walk will follow mown and paved paths on a largely flat route, but the ground is uneven and sturdy footwear is required.

There will be an opportunity to use the toilets and fill water bottles at the outset but there are no toilets elsewhere on the reserve.

Visits to hides will provide a resting opportunity, but participants should be comfortable in spending 2+ hours on their feet with no access to facilities.

Please wear and bring weather-appropriate clothing, and any snacks you may require.

Please note there is no access to the reserve outside of the guided walk.

The closest café and shop is Abberton Nature Discovery Centre, approximately 7 minutes’ drive away.
