About the event

The Beetles (Coleoptera) are the largest order of insects in the world, with over 400,000 described species. The order includes jewel-like beauties, subterranean wood munchers, and fantastically beautiful pollinators.  Beetles were among the first pollinators of angiosperms, pollinating magnolias and the like during the age of the dinosaurs. 

 John will introduce us to some of Essex’ most spectacular and beautiful beetle ‘stars,’ before taking something of a deep dive into the pollinating activities of the Longhorn Beetles (Family Cerambycidae) and the gardener’s friends the Ladybirds (Coccinellidae).  

Enjoy an insight into the lives of these fabulous little creatures, some advice on welcoming them into your gardens and community spaces, and enjoy a dash of folklore and history, exploring our relationships with beetles down the years.
