Refuel after a long walk in the café, where we serve up hot and cold drinks, toasties, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, freshly baked Tiptree cakes and more. Discover wildlife and history at Langdon Nature Reserve, which is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is the largest inland reserve managed by Essex Wildlife Trust, With miles of pathways, experience the mosaic of habitats we look after including ancient woodland, meadows, lakes and former Plotland gardens.

Facilities and access
Car parking and entry
Parking is free at our eco-friendly living car park, but we welcome donations of £2 per car, which you can pay in the centre. Disabled parking is available.
There is a coach drop-off space, if you are planning on bringing a group, please ensure you have pre-booked your visit.
Cafe
We are proud to offer many locally sourced produce from Essex suppliers including as Wicks Manor, Fairfields Farm and Tiptree Patisserie. We want everyone to be welcome, so we have a range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available daily.
A flavour of what you can expect to find at the café are:
- Fresh coffees, hot chocolate, matcha and spiced chai, all available with alternative milk
- Organic and fair trade tea
- Cold drinks including local Barn Farm juices, smoothies and milkshakes
- Freshly baked Tiptree cakes including classics like farmhouse fruit, carrot, or cherry bakewell, as well as seasonal specials
- Sweet treats and ice cream, including local artisan Saffron Ice Cream
- Sandwiches, toasties and paninis
- Sausage rolls and pasties
- Soups, toast, jacket potatoes
Shop
Find something special in our shop, where we offer a wide variety of eco-friendly products for nature lovers and children. We have a range of binoculars, scopes and accessories, books for adults and children, bird feed and boxes, jams, chutneys, as well as official Peter Rabbit toys and gifts,
All profits from the shop go toward Essex Wildlife Trust’s conservation work in Essex.
Accessibility
We are a wheelchair friendly venue, with step-free access. There are toilet facilities including one that is wheelchair accessible and has baby changing facilities.
Please ask a member of our friendly team for details on wheelchair friendly routes around the nature reserve.
Visitors with dogs
Dogs are welcome at all outdoor seating areas at the Nature Discovery Centre but, other than assistance dogs, they are not allowed inside the café and centre.
Please stay on the permitted trails on the nature reserve and keep your dog on a lead. There is one dog waste bin at the nature reserve near to the centre. We ask visitors to be responsible for their own dog waste and take it home with them if they are not nearby the bin.

Other facilities on site include bicycle parking, free Wi-Fi, toilets, and room hire.
Nature Trails
Peter Rabbit Trail
Featuring Beatrix Potters’ beloved characters, enjoy our trail to find Peter Rabbit and his friends. A perfect photo opportunity awaits with Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Tommy Brock and many more of our wonderful wooden sculptures. A Peter Rabbit Trail Map is available to purchase for just £1.50 from the centre.
Walking Trails
There are various routes around the nature reserve awaiting you. Perhaps you want to learn about the history of the Plotlands, find out where the wildflower meadows are, or go on an all-day hike across the whole reserve. Pop in to the centre to purchase trail maps and find out more from our friendly team. ,

What to do
Discover
There is always something new and exciting to discover at Langdon. Throughout the year we have a range of trails and activities to get children and families closer to nature.
Explore
Our stunning nature reserve is set within 461 acres and there are miles of walks through an abundance of habitats, including meadows, woodlands, lakes and gardens. Can you spot a Kingfisher, Great Crested Newt or one of our species of woodpecker? You can enjoy some commanding views from the top of our sweeping meadows towards London.
In the summer, butterfly enthusiasts will enjoy finding our 30 species of butterfly including the infamous Grizzled Skipper. You can also spot our 7 species of wild orchids in bloom from May-June, with over 350 wildflowers and plants across the reserve.
Events and activities
We offer a range of events and activities for everyone all year round to encourage all ages to connect with nature. From weekly Nature Tots and holiday activities with our wonderful Wilder Learning team, to ranger-led weekend and evening wildlife walks, to artisan markets and special annual events such as Dawn Chorus walks, , there’s something for everyone.
We also have two weekly craft groups that meet inside the centre:
- Plotlands Art Group, every Monday 11am – 1pm, £5 per session
- Wilder Knitters, every Tuesday 10.30am – 12.30pm, free
All levels are welcome. Bring your own equipment and turn up on the day!
What to see
Explore the former Dunton Plotlands, including the last remaining house of its kind – The Haven. The Haven is the last of nearly 200 Plotlands homes that occupied the site now owned by the Essex Wildlife Trust. Owned by the Mills family since it was built in the 1930s, it was still standing when the Wildlife Trust took ownership of the reserve in the 1980s. Please note the Haven house is currently closed while we develop exciting new plans to restore and preserve this important piece of Langdon’s heritage. Please do talk to the Nature Discovery Centre team to find out more.
Volunteering at Langdon
Volunteers play a huge part in the work we do at Langdon.
Types of volunteering could include: shop, café, visitor welcome and membership, events or work parties.
Birthday parties
We offer a variety of fabulous themed birthday parties set in beautiful outdoor locations at our Nature Discovery Centres.
Schools and colleges
We believe in nurturing a lifelong love of nature at every age and stage of life. Our Wilder Learning programme offers opportunities for children, educators, adults and families to connect with the natural world. Designed to inspire curiosity and conservation, our programs are suitable for all ages.
Room hire
The Hub is our unique room inside the centre available to hire all year round and is the perfect place to host an event,
The bright and airy space has doors opening onto a wraparound garden with bench seating. The Hub also has its own dedicated toilets. If you would like a cup of tea/coffee and a slice of cake or prefer a light lunch, refreshments can be provided by our team.
