About the reserve

Langdon Nature Discovery Park is set in a stunning 461-acre landscape of woodland, meadows, lakes, and is the site of the former Plotland houses. Langdon is the largest inland reserve managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSS1). Some of the highest land in Essex can be found on the reserve, offering commanding views and miles of walking trails, rich in wildlife.

In summer, visitors can turtle doves, nightingales, and woodcocks; with winter bringing finches and thrushes. Butterfly enthusiasts will enjoy finding our 30 species of butterfly, including White Admiral, Green Hairstreak, and the infamous Grizzled Skipper. Our 7 species of wild orchids can be spotted in bloom from May until June, and there are over 350 wildflowers and plants across the reserve. In the meadows, look out for badgers, foxes, and weasels. Be sure to tell a member of the team what you’ve spotted, to add to our sightings board!

Walks through the reserve take visitors through many different habitats, offering a nature-packed day out. Head into our Nature Discovery Centre to pick up one of our reserve-wide trail maps, and be sure to come along for one of our ranger-led walks, where you can learn more about the incredible wildlife we have at Langdon!

Langdon Nature Discovery Centre, set within the park, features a café, wildlife-themed gift shop, accessible facilities, and detailed information about the park’s trails and wildlife. Visitors can relax in indoor or outdoor seating, enjoy seasonal activities and events, and use the centre as a base to explore the park’s diverse habitats and scenic walks.
